GUN GUY AND NUT CASE
GUY:
I must say that I am quite surprised at the Sun-Times [''Suspected burglar returns to Wilmette home, is shot twice,'' metro story, Dec. 31]. Seeing an article that seemingly puts the use of firearms in a positive light was most unexpected.
We have always been told by the media that no good could come from the use of firearms. The media never tell us of the estimated 2.5 million times a gun is used to prevent a crime -- most of the time without firing a single round. Statistically, there are more people killed by drowning, fires, car wrecks, etc., than firearms, but I guess stories about those aren't as interesting. Thanks for finally getting it right.
Chuck Guy,
Elk Grove Village
NUT:
If the gun lobby has its way, everyone will have a gun, and we all will be much safer. We can defend ourselves against the bad guys.
The other side to this story: John's wife uses her gun on him when he comes home tipsy after a night out with the boys. Jim uses his gun to protect himself from the guy who gave him the finger in that traffic jam coming home from work. Lucille uses her gun on the new neighbor playing that loud music next door. George is upset and uses his gun on the arrogant waiter.
That is the picture when we all will have a gun. Of course, it will open up a whole new world for the gang-bangers. They will be just one of the boys now.

MESSAGE FOR GUN OWNERS FROM CIGARETTE SMOKERS
Customers who used to flock to Jack's Restaurant in Skokie after midnight were a different breed, says night manager P.C. Clemente.
They embraced the wee hours, held court with friends in comfy booths and lingered over coffee while most people slept.
And many smoked cigarettes.
But ever since Skokie banned smoking in its restaurants last July, the night owls have flown off to smoke elsewhere, the restaurant's owner says. And that has caused Jack's to end a 43-year-old tradition that residents from miles around took for granted.

SHOCKING STORY HAS NOT ONE THING TO DO WITH GUN RIGHTS
Anna, a 22-year-old graduate student in Manhattan, said she remembers clearly how she was introduced to one of New York's sauciest underground social scenes. It was via an instant message from a stranger who had seen her personals ad online at Nerve.com. A local promoter of erotic events called One Leg Up was organizing a party in a TriBeCa loft on the theme of the film 'Moulin Rouge,' her suitor wrote, and he wanted to know if Anna would be interested in going 'with me and my hot tattooed girlfriend.' Anna mulled her reply, then fired off an e-mail message.
'I was like, `Yeah, dude, I'll check that out,' ' she recalled.

DEPUTIES RECEIVE PROBATION?????
KANE COUNTY -- Two former Kane County sheriff's deputies pleaded guilty Friday to attempted official misconduct for stealing property from a home in a search and were sentenced to a year of probation.
Brandon Dahlke, 27, of the 2300 block of Stacy Circle, Montgomery, and Michael Eurkaitis, 32, of the 500 block of Dillman Street, Plainfield, took a .22-caliber rifle and a police scanner from a home on Oct. 5, 2002. The theft occurred when they were looking for the subject of an arrest warrant, prosecutors said.
The Kane County sheriff's office found the rifle in Dahlke's home and the scanner at Eurkaitis' home in March. Both men were fired from the sheriff's office.
Dahlke's attorney, Kathleen Colton, said the plea was made because of the risks involved with going to trial. "He still maintains he's innocent of any crime," Colton said.
Help me understand this....probation & fired from job for theft.....what is wrong with this picture.....why are they not charged with theft and put in jail and/or, let them try their case in court like the rest of us morons.

SEND A LETTER TO THE WILMETTE LIFE AT THE LINK BELOW
My Letter:
Sirs:
As a resident of gun friendly Oak Brook, IL I would like to thank Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter for the huge amount of press Wilmette has received about homeowners in your fair village being disarmed.
Nothing attracts criminals like gun free homes. Consequently the more criminals the Chief attracts to Wilmette the better for the rest of us who won't have to deal with them.
If any Wilmette citizen would like a window sign that reads 'This Home is Gun Free' I will be pleased to provide them with one.

BRADY CAMPAIGN GIVE UTAH D- AND ILLINOIS B+ FOR GUN SAFETY. WHERE DO YOU FEEL SAFER? UTAH OR ILLINOIS?
A new law that allows concealed-carry permit holders to pack heat in Utah schools is troubling for two national gun-control groups.
In their annual evaluation of states' gun laws, the Brady Campaign and Million Mom March send Utah to the 'time out chair' for 'irresponsibly weakening' measures aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of children.
And for the second year in a row, the groups give Utah a failing grade (D minus) in gun safety.

ERIC ZORN ON WILMETTE'S GUN ORDINANCE
Today's Trib story by Lisa Black on the Wilmette homeowner who shot an alleged home invader last month and was charged Thursday with violating a village ordinance that bans possession of handguns notes that --
Hale DeMar, 54, also broke state law by failing to renew his Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification Card after it expired in 1988, police said.
Hmm, 1988. What was going on that year that might have made an area resident hesitate about reminding authorities that he owned a handgun?
Answer: That was the year that Laurie Dann went on a fatal shooting rampage in a Winnetka elementary school -- a terrible event that prompted several northern suburbs including Wilmette to begin debating handgun-ownership bans.
That village's ban was enacted in 1989.
Was DeMar a Wilmette resident in 1988? DeMar is not giving interviews, police officials have told the Tribune that they're not sure and our databases suggest that he wasn't.
In either case, gun-rights advocates have been handed a compelling story here, no question about it, just as gun-control advocates are handed compelling stories when toddlers shoot themselves or playmates with guns kept for protection or when spouses ventilate one another in the heat of some domestic quarrel.
Rather that let anecdotes or sentiment sway your feelings either way on this urgent public policy question, I suggest reading this stimulating, on-line debate on concealed-carry between John Birch, president of Concealed Carry, Inc. of Oak Brook and Thomas Mannard, executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

REAL EMAIL ADDRESS FOR WILMETTE POLICE CHIEF AND TUESDAY NIGHT INVITE TO THREE RING CIRCUS
PLEASE FORWARD THIS INFO AS APPROPRIATE
I sent email to gcarpenter@wilmette.com and it has not been bounced back. Therefore this looks to be Wilmette PD Chief George Carpenter's direct email address. I'd still CC email to the generic police@wilmette.com address as I'm not sure I have cracked his real email or not. But if I have....He's going to get one heap a lot of email if you guys pass this around some! I'm sure the chief wants to hear from us since he was so quick to yap to the press about the virtues of victim disarmament. Keep your email on topic, short and polite.
**********************************
On Tuesday, January 13th, 2004 at 7:30pm you will get a chance to hear Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter publicly explain his views on why victims of crime should be disarmed. We need to be there.
Why? Well here is a quote from this hard charging crime fighter who knows better than the rest of us:
"The outcome of the matter in this case was very fortunate for the homeowner," he said. "We much prefer, for the safety of the home, that a resident who finds himself in this situation immediately lock the door of the room he's in and dial 911." SOURCE: Chicago Tribune
Full info on this meeting is at: http://www.wilmette.com/admin/agenda.pdf
I plan to be there.
I also hear Jay Marvin from WLS will attend. Also I just heard from Tribune Reporter Lisa Black that the Tribune will be covering this. Suffice to say the more gun rights advocates who show up the bigger the three ring circus.
I am wondering if any of you plan to attend? Does anyone know a good meeting spot before the meeting? I don't know anything about Wilmette except for their goofy gun control law.
I can tell you this, nothing agitates guys like Chief Carpenter more than gun owners congregating in groups. He's more afraid of gun owners than criminals for some reason. I surely hope we can give him the message that he may be trumpeting the liberal party line, but to me he's just another cop who thinks their should be one law for cops and another for victims.
It has been suggested by Concealed Carry, Inc. Associate Blogger that we wear our Fanny Packs....sounds good to me.
Let me know if you are coming so I can tell you where we will meet first and all that. If anyone is an expert on Wilmette please be in touch!
FINAL NOTE: Hope this meeting room has a lot of seats!

WILMETTE ENFORCES GUN BAN......DEMAR CHARGED WITH DEFENDING HIMSELF & HOME. SUCH IS LIFE IN THE SOCIALIST STATE OF ILLINOIS
A Wilmette homeowner was charged Thursday with illegally owning two handguns after he shot a home intruder last month as his family prepared for bed.
Besides violating a village ordinance that bans possession of handguns, Hale DeMar, 54, also broke state law by failing to renew his Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification Card after it expired in 1988, police said.
The charges underscore Wilmette authorities' serious concerns about the shooting, said Police Chief George Carpenter.
"The outcome of the matter in this case was very fortunate for the homeowner," he said. "We much prefer, for the safety of the home, that a resident who finds himself in this situation immediately lock the door of the room he's in and dial 911."
DeMar, who lives in the 0-99 block of Linden Avenue, shot a Chicago man accused of entering the family's home twice within 24 hours, first by crawling through a dog door in the garage and then returning with a stolen house key.
Morio Billings, 31, is in Cook County Jail with bail set at $3 million. He was charged with two counts of felony residential burglary and one count of felony possession of a stolen vehicle. DeMar shot Billings in the shoulder and calf about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 29 in the kitchen of his home, police said.
DeMar, owner of the Oak Tree Restaurant, 900 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, declined to comment after he was reached by phone Thursday. He is scheduled to appear Feb. 6 at the Skokie courthouse on both charges.
Wilmette police charged DeMar with a Class A misdemeanor for owning handguns without a valid firearms card. The cards must be renewed every five years, according to state law. Police confiscated the two handguns from DeMar, whom they described as cooperative.
If convicted, DeMar could get up to a year in jail, a $2,500 fine or court supervision or probation, said Jerry Lawrence, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.
The village's handgun ordinance carries a separate fine of up to $750.
Officials do not know when DeMar bought the weapons, said Wilmette police spokesman Roger Ockrim. He said he wasn't sure what kind of guns were involved.
The case has triggered debate over the village's 15-year-old ordinance. Dozens of out-of-town opponents from as far away as California have phoned, e-mailed and written letters of complaint to village officials, Carpenter said.
Wilmette residents, though, have responded positively, he said.
"Wilmette residents are much safer without a handgun in their homes," said Carpenter, who has been asked to speak on the issue during the Wilmette Village Board meeting Tuesday.
"We see handguns stolen, used in domestic arguments or suicides," he said. "Those are far more likely outcomes than when you would actually need a handgun to defend yourself."
Other Illinois municipalities that ban possession of handguns include Chicago, Evanston, Morton Grove and Oak Park. Communities that ban the sale of handguns include Deerfield, Elk Grove Village, Forest Park, Highland Park, Niles, Northbrook, River Grove and Westmont.
Thom Mannard, executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, applauded Wilmette's decision to charge the homeowner. He echoed Carpenter's argument that guns are more likely to be used in domestic disputes, accidental shootings or suicides than self-defense.
Out of 29,573 gun deaths nationwide in 2001, only 554 were due to "legal intervention" or self-defense, he said Thursday.
"Do I sympathize with [DeMar] and what happened to him? Absolutely," said Mannard, whose office is in Chicago. "At the same time, I think it's important for law enforcement to at least prosecute for breaking this law."
But Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, believes handgun bans are outrageous.
"The right to self-defense is the right that all creatures on this Earth have, including Wilmette," Pearson said. "What they do is they make the citizens in these villages and towns fair game."
Meanwhile, police continue to investigate whether Billings, who has a criminal history in Minnesota, is responsible for other area burglaries. Billings was convicted last year of a similar home burglary in an affluent Minneapolis suburb.
After he was shot in Wilmette, Billings crashed through the home's front window to escape, then drove himself to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in the family's stolen sport-utility vehicle, authorities said.
Prosecutors said Billings broke into the home the night before and stole a TV, a video-game system, a set of keys and the SUV. DeMar confronted him on his return trip, authorities said.
"I regret the intrusion on this family's privacy," Carpenter said of DeMar. "He strikes us as being a good man with a good heart who did something that apparently came naturally to him. That's why it's important the Wilmette police speak out now."
Notice that the police chief wants you to be disarmed and not be able to defend yourself. He mentions that a handgun in the home is much more likely to be stolen, or be used in a suicide. Yet, if you read past articles on this, there have been a rash of breakins and they are trying to figure out who the culprit(s) is/are.
Can the police chief please tell me where he gets his figures on the dangers of handguns in the home? Can the police chief tell me why he ignores the facts concerning the defensive uses of firearms? Can the police chief please tell me why the Second Amendment doesn't apply in Wilmette; the God given right to self-defense; can he explain how he is going to guarantee EVERY Wilmette citizens personal safetly.
I'm sorry, but this attitude is dangerous!
You may contact the Wilmette Police department and politely tell them your views. Wilmette PD

Wilmette PD

SANTA CRUZ ATTACK PROMPTS SELF DEFENSE CLASSES: WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING GUNS.....WE'LL JUST SHOUT THEM DOWN!!!
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Beginning next week, women who work in downtown Santa Cruz can do even more to protect themselves.
In response to recent attacks, the city's Commission for Prevention of Violence Against Women will be offering defense classes. Eventually, flyers will be distributed throughout downtown, telling women whom they can contact for more information.
The most recent attack happened in broad daylight in a busy parking lot behind a local bookstore, near Pacific Avenue and Cathcart Street. Investigators said a 19-year-old woman was grabbed as she got into her car.
The classes will offer free assertiveness and verbal self-defense workshops for people who work downtown.
"They're basically verbal techniques. A lot of women are shy about speaking up. And if they're taken by surprise, their first instinct is to shrink. So, they go through a lot of exercise to find that strong voice," said Gillian Greensite, chairwoman of the event.
The free classes will be next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For more details, call 420-6298.
They're are also longer courses offered that run six to eight weeks.

BIG DUMMIES TOO DUMB TO DEMAND AN END TO MURDER
From the Chicago Tribune: Murder capital

Jenison, Mich. -- Chicago is once again the murder capital of America. This fact should bring forth an outpouring of anger and disgust. Year after year after year the killings go on.
The people of the city of Chicago and Illinois must demand an end to this. The city, the state and the people must demand that the courts allow the legal authorities to put down the street gangs. There is no good reason for a gang to exist.
Their only real purpose is the use of violence and intimidation to gain control of neighborhoods and the illegal activity in that neighborhood. It is time to protect the community and anyone who comes to Chicago from the very real threat of this disaster. The city that works should not be replaced with the city that dies.

CERTIFIED BIG DUMMY PROVES HE IS A WHACK JOB. WAIT TILL YOU READ THIS!
We all identify with Hale DeMar, who shot a burglar in his home in Wilmette. We feel empathy for his predicament. Yet DeMar should not be made into a poster child for crime victims. The law has always placed reasonable restrictions on the possession and use of firearms, in the interest of the common good. In illegally keeping a handgun at his home, he placed himself above the law and chose to violate it.
Suppose the outcome had been different: He shot a friend who came in unannounced, the gun was stolen by the burglar and fenced to a robber, or a child found the gun and accidentally shot a sibling. These types of occurrences happen far more often than homeowners defending themselves from an intruder. Would we then feel he acted responsibly in keeping an illegal handgun at home and should get a pass?
DeMar should be prosecuted for illegal possession of a handgun. This case is not about self-defense or even about gun control. Having a handgun in his home compromised our collective security.
Wilmette after a vigorous debate decided that having handguns in the home was an unacceptable risk to us all. If DeMar disagreed with the law, his choice was to work through the legislative process to have the law changed or to challenge it in court -- not to take the law into his own hands. If DeMar is not prosecuted, what message are we giving to the community, including scores of law-abiding gun owners who do comply with the village's ban on handguns?

For the record, we feel DeMar should be prosecuted as well. Let's air all this at trial and in the press. Also Patrick Fitzmaurice and Paul Williams have great letters at the link below. Check them out!

ILLINOIS COPS TO GET NEW SYSTEM TO MONITOR CIVILIANS
Illinois will become the first state in the nation to establish a single database that allows police to "connect the dots" about emerging crime patterns, roving gangs and terrorist threats under a landmark agreement unveiled Wednesday.
CLEAR lets Chicago Police officers search for suspects based on nicknames, tattoos, country of origin, vehicle make and model and other characteristics logged in a "data warehouse" available on 3,000 land-based police computers.
Mayor Daley called the rapid exchange of information among law enforcement agencies "one of the most important weapons in the battle against crime and terrorism."
In three years, all 1,200 law enforcement agencies in Illinois will be linked to the new system. Over time, officials hope to include other Midwest states as well.
"The I-CLEAR system will contain millions of pieces of information about criminals and their methods of operation, as well as firearms, arrest warrants and unsolved crimes. . . . It will be a central repository for information vital to homeland security, including federal and state watch lists," Daley said.
Added Assistant Deputy Supt. Ron Huberman, the Police Department's computer guru: "If it's not simple enough for a cop to walk up and use it, we have failed in our mission."
In other words Deputy Supt Huberman is saying cops are as stoopid as dirt and he's Albert F'ing Einstein. Want to bet all us FOID holders end up in this database as a "terrorist and criminal threat?"

A second class-action lawsuit demanding reparations from 'key players' involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade is adding fuel to a nationwide debate.
The suit names 71 defendants -- including nations, companies and Pope John Paul II -- and calls them to task for 'failing to account for the money they have made off of our misery and exploitation,' said Bob Brown, a longtime Chicago-based activist and co-director of Pan-African Roots. Brown began the filing process in federal court Wednesday morning.

WILMETTE GUN OWNER TO SURRENDER GUN? IT MIGHT BE SO.
Glenview -- The Wilmette homeowner's successful defense of his family with a handgun illustrates a politically incorrect truth that some Chicago and suburban politicians simply don't want discussed. Any of us, at some point, may have to protect ourselves and our loved ones from criminals, even in our own homes.
Perhaps this incident will encourage the repeal of the Wilmette ordinance banning handguns. Sadly, the Wilmette authorities are now asking this homeowner to surrender his pistol to them. They apparently prefer that if he ever again has to confront a felon in his own house, he do so unarmed.

OHIO: GOVERNOR TAFT EAGER TO SIGN CCW BILL?
Stopping crime is a big reason some people in the Tri-state want to be able to carry a concealed weapon.
Now they can as the state passed a 'conceal carry' law Wednesday and Governor Taft said he was eager to sign it.
People who want to carry guns said it is the 'concealed' part that they want the bad guys to be well aware of.
Cathy Heil admits her job can be dangerous.
Delivering pizzas for Papa John's, she's been robbed at gunpoint in the past but she does not plan on carrying a gun now that the law says she can.
'Hell no! Ha ha ... definitely not,' Heil said.
Meantime, Vernon Ferrier could not be more pleased.
He's the Hyde Park stylist who cuts locks and carries glocks. He showed 9News the 357 glock on his hip.
'I'm going to walk down the street and I'm going to carry a gun,' Ferrier said.
Ferrier is one of four people in Cincinnati who protested, even sued to have the state's concealed carry ban overturned.
Now he says he can legally conceal his weapon when he visits Over-the-Rhine to cut hair for the homeless.
'I have an unalienable right to never, ever be a victim. I'm not giving my life for any greater good. There is no social greater good as far as I'm concerned than the lives of myself and my family. That's not happening,' Ferrier said.

UTAH COURT DECISION SPARKS HUMAN RIGHTS DEBATE
"A state judge's decision to uphold the University of Utah's 27-year-old policy not allowing firearms on campus has sparked a human rights debate among gun control critics and supporters.
The Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff filed an appeal to Third District Judge Robert Hilder's Aug. 29 ruling. Hilder's decision directly opposed a state law enacted by the 2003 Legislature, which allows authorized individuals to have concealed firearms on school property for the right of self-defense.
In light of the University of Utah's battle to keep firearms off campus, other Utah universities are putting a hold on any additional policy until the issue comes to a resolve in courts.
'We're taking a 'wait and see' stance,' Mark Peterson, Dixie State College's public relations director said. 'We want to see how the University of Utah's policy stands up in court.'
Shurtleff asserted that according to state law, Utah's schools and universities must allow permit holders to carry concealed handguns into the classrooms and dormitories.
BYU has a strict firearm policy prohibiting the possession of any weapon on campus, but because BYU is a private university its campus is considered private property. This allows the university to prohibit the possession of firearms on campus without breaking any laws.
'Gun bans do not reduce violent crime, no matter how well intentioned or how stringent,' said Elwood Powell, president of the Utah State Rifle & Pistol Association. 'While we want to keep armed criminals out of schools and everywhere else, we refuse to disarm law abiding citizens.'
The University of Utah claimed that because the school policy only restricts the faculty and student possession of weapons, no state laws or rights are trodden upon. The policy still allows visitors and community "

OHIO CCW PASSES, GOV. TAFT COMMITTED TO SIGNING
The Associated Press
1/7/2004, 3:27 p.m. ET
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Lawmakers passed a bill Wednesday to allow Ohioans to carry hidden guns, and Gov. Taft has committed to signing the legislation.
The Senate vote was 25-8, and the House vote was 69-24. Taft will sign the bill, said Elise Spriggs, the governor's top legislative lobbyist.
The vote marked the first time the Legislature and the governor's office have agreed to a deal after a decade of debate on the highly contentious issue.
Ohioans who apply for permits to carry concealed weapons would have to pay a fee, undergo background checks and be trained in the use of a weapon.
The bill also makes the names of permit holders in each county available to reporters who ask a sheriff's department for the names. Taft's insistence on this provision derailed the bill late last year after House lawmakers balked.
But House Speaker Larry Householder this week agreed to go along with the requirement, which the Ohio Senate had already informally agreed to.
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Jim Aslanides of Coshocton, accepted the public records compromise but cautioned reporters Wednesday not to 'abuse' the confidentiality of permit-holders.
He said once the law has been in place for a while, adjustments could be made.
Taft had long said he would only sign the bill if law enforcement supported it. As that backing fell into place, he raised the issue of public records, leading some supporters to accuse him of looking for reasons to veto the bill.
The State Highway Patrol dropped its earlier opposition once the bill said weapons in vehicles must be locked away or holstered in plain view.
Ohio would become the 46th state to allow carrying concealed weapons under the bill.

Ohioans For Concealed Carry
OHIO CCW COULD FINALLY BE SIGNED TODAY
COLUMBUS -- A final deal has been reached on a bill allowing Ohioans to carry concealed weapons -- and this time state elected officials really mean it.
By the end of today, a revised version of House Bill 12 should pass both chambers of the Legislature and be on its way to Gov. Bob Taft, who has promised to sign it, assuming the deal is not broken.
The stalemate, over whether permit records collected by county sheriff's offices should be open to the public, was broken when the House agreed to allow journalists access to entire county lists of names.
The prior bill, which allowed journalists to access permit holder records only by asking for specific names, did not go far enough to ensure the system worked properly, Taft said.
Rep. Jim Aslanides, R-Coshocton, who sponsored the bill, was unhappy with the concession but said he would agree to it in order to get a bill passed.
"This is nothing more than a good vehicle to amend later to make a better bill, a better law," he said. "We can amend it once we prove to Ohioans that it does work."
Aslanides also was quick to warn reporters.
"If journalists abuse that privilege, I assure you I will do everything in my power to make sure as many legislators as possible realize that kind of abuse, and to make changes," he said.
How about prosecuting the a**holes???
Toby Hoover, director of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence, wishes Ohio would remain part of that list.
"This is not going to enhance public safety -- it hasn't anyplace else," she said, adding that the bill "adds to the culture of fear."
Either she is a complete idiot & clueless or is lying through her teeth.....with liberals like this, doesn't make much difference....as usual you're too stoopid to know how to handle a firearm and use it responsibly. Same old story.

KANSAS: DEMOCRAT SAYS THIS MAY BE THE YEAR FOR CCW? NOW THIS IS SCAREY!
Topeka — Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' opposition to a bill allowing Kansans to carry concealed handguns may not matter, according to a northeast Kansas legislator who is pushing for the law.
Rep. Candy Ruff, a Democrat from Leavenworth, said she hoped the legislation would win by such large margins in the Legislature that it would survive a veto by Sebelius. Overturning a veto would require two-thirds votes in the House and Senate.
"My whole take on this is to work to make it veto-proof in order not to involve the governor," Ruff said.
And as usual, the natives of IL are supposed to run around defenseless. Meanwhile, nothing heard from the I$RA and Mayor Daley reported safe.

FEDS FINALLY GETTING TOUGH ON GUN VIOLATIONS
SALT LAKE CITY -- For using a handgun to rob a credit union, shoe store and pizza parlor, Wally Martinez was sentenced to 55 years in prison just on the gun violations. It was the longest firearms sentence doled out since U.S. Attorney Paul Warner's office started 'Project Safe Neighborhoods' four years ago.
Prosecutors handled 400 of the cases last year, up from 300 indictments the year before, and informants say the word is getting out to felons on the street: Don't mess with firearms.
In a radio advertisement playing in Utah on behalf of Project Safe Neighborhoods, Martinez's mother conveys the grief of having a son sentenced to 65 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
'The first words out of his mouth were 'Mom, they killed me,' she says, her voice breaking into a sob. 'My son will die there and I think what an awful way to die -- in a prison.'
Martinez, 25, has been in prison since September 2002."
What an awful way to die??? I guess the gun just jumped into his hands on its own (its the guns fault) and the devil made him commit the crimes...unbelievable.

FIREARMS INDUSTRY NEWSLETTER PUT ON SPAM LIST: THANK YOU AOHELL!
Whether it is a purely technical glitch or something else has yet to be exactly determined, but we have received complaints for the past several weeks from Bullet Points (BP) subscribers who missed their weekly edition of our subscription-only newsletter. Then, several of the staff at NSSF also stopped receiving personal copies of Bullet Points at home e-mail addresses.
The common denominator to the missing editions was America Online, and some technical forensic work on the Internet determined that mail from our address was being classified by AOL as spam, the unwanted junk mail cluttering e-mail inboxes at a staggering rate. Past editions of Bullet Points may be lingering in a spam folder accessible to AOL users, but it's a feature with which many may not be familiar. Plus, it's obviously impossible for us to tell our regular subscribers about the problem since AOL is blocking delivery, and we are investigating complaints that other providers may be doing the same.
Please forward this copy of Bullet Points to anyone you know who is interested in the firearms industry and hunting and shooting topics to alert them to the issue, while we work to restore Bullet Points to its rightful distribution. As always, BP subscription and unsubscribe options are available on the NSSF Web site.

JOLIET MADD OFFICIAL ON TRIAL - WOMAN ACCUSED OF TAKING $45,000
January 6, 2004
The founder of the Will County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, whose son was killed by a drunken driver, stole about $45,000 from the organization and forged documents to conceal her acts, a prosecutor said as her trial opened Monday.
A lawyer for Antoinette Wilda, 48, countered that prosecutors would not be able to prove she committed any crime. Wilda never took accounting training offered by MADD, said defense attorney Phil Mock, suggesting that lax bookkeeping occurred.
Wilda, of the 900 block of Maplecrest Avenue in Joliet, is charged with 13 counts of forgery, a felony that may carry a 2- to 5-year prison sentence, and one count of theft of more than $10,000 but less than $100,000, a felony with a sentence range of between 3 and 7 years in prison.
Probation is an option on all charges."
PROBATION IS AN OPTION??? GOTTA LOVE THESE LIBERAL WHACKOS - THE ONLY THING MISSING HERE IS THIS WOMAN BEING ON TRIAL FOR A DUI ALSO.

SOUNDS LIKE ILLINOIS ONLY IT'S OHIO
ASHLAND -- A New Hampshire man arrested last week in Ashland County on weapons charges appears to be gearing up to take on Ohio's concealed weapons law.
And he might have plenty of help.
A Web site seeking donations to help fund legal costs by attorneys for Jeffrey L. Jordan, 42, of Lyndeborough, N.H., is under construction. Web sites and chatrooms are being inundated with pleas for financial help.
On Dec. 29, troopers from the Ashland post of the Ohio Highway Patrol stopped Jordan on Interstate 71 in Ashland County for speeding.
During the traffic stop, troopers seized several weapons. Jordan was arrested and faces multiple charges, including two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, fourth-degree felonies which could result in jail terms of up to 18 months.

GUN CONTROL IN CHICAGO WORKS...TO BOOST HOMICIDE RATE
From SAF
Strict gun control in Chicago has worked...to once again boost the homicide rate, making the Windy City the most murderous city in the nation for the past 12 months, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) said today.
"Chicago finished off the year with more murders than New York or Los Angeles," said SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb. "During the past 12 months, 599 people were murdered in Chicago, three more than in New York, where 596 people were slain, and about 100 more than in Los Angeles.
"Isn't it remarkable," he observed, "that Chicago, New York and Los Angeles have some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, yet they still typically lead the nation in the number of homicides?"
Gottlieb was particularly critical about Chicago's murders because Mayor Richard Daley has made his anti-gun philosophy a cornerstone of his administration. Gottlieb recalled that one of the city's highest profile crimes was the workplace massacre at Windy City Core Supply in August. In that case, recidivist felon Salvador Tapia used an unregistered handgun that had previously been owned by two now-deceased Chicago police officers.
"How Tapia got a gun that had been owned by two cops in violation of the very gun laws they were sworn to uphold underscores the hypocrisy and complete failure of Chicago's Draconian anti-gun laws," Gottlieb stated. "Chicago's murder rate will stand as a monument the institutionalized brutality that gun control represents.
"On the other hand, in Detroit, a city once plagued by runaway murder rates, the number of homicides has reportedly dropped to its lowest level since 1968," Gottlieb noted. "Two years ago, Michigan reformed its concealed carry law, and today, thousands of law-abiding citizens in Michigan are legally armed. Gosh, do you suppose there is any correlation?
"Mayor Daley should publicly admit that gun control in his city has been an absolute failure," Gottlieb stated. "It is time for Daley and his anti-gun colleagues to take responsibility for every one of these killings, and to either change the law, or get out of public service."
OK all you big dummies in Chicagoland, raise your right hand to Fuhrer Daley. Man are you stupid for putting up with Chicago's crap!

STATE SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS CCW IN NEW MEXICO
SANTA FE, N.M. -- The state Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to the constitutionality of New Mexico's new law allowing people to carry concealed handguns.
A children's advocacy group and a physician filed a lawsuit last month claiming the new law violated the state constitution, but the high court rejected that argument Monday.
The law allows New Mexicans over 25 years of age to get licenses to carry concealed, loaded handguns if they first complete a firearms training course and pass a background check. "

WHY MORE SENIOR CITIZENS ARE CARRYING GUNS
They're protecting themselves from what they see as a rise in violence, even if crime statistics say otherwise.
TUCSON, ARIZ. – A pistol's sharp report pierces the morning calm, as Charles Van Vibber lowers his Glock automatic. He scans a bullet-stopping berm among dusty cactuses at the Desert Trails Gun Club, as a breeze ruffles his white hair.
"You need to be able to protect yourself, because the police are not always able to protect you at any moment," he says.
Mr. Van Vibber, a retired auto-parts worker, and other older Americans account for more than a third of the 700 members regularly honing their marksmanship at this no-nonsense range on Tucson's fringes. Some practice simply for pleasure. But a growing number, including Van Vibber, are serious about protecting themselves, says Desert Trails owner Richard Batory - who cites a "nearly 100 percent jump in the last year of my older members who carry concealed weapons."

LIES ABOUT GUNS!
Take a look at this number and see if it means anything to you, 2,452,643. Does it ring a bell? No? Well if you are thinking these numbers represent a lotto winner’s purse or the number of times Democratic candidates have attacked President Bush in the last month you are mistaken. No instead this very large number represents the number of times Americans have used firearms to thwart crimes and defend themselves over the past year.
According to the National Self-Defense Survey created by Florida State University criminologists in 1994 the rate of defensive gun uses can be projected to approximately 2.5 million per year, or one defensive use for every 13 seconds.
Do those numbers cone as a surprise? Certainly they would to those who buy into the myths put forward by the gun control advocates in our nation.
According to their information guns are the very worst things any American can own.
They love to represent guns as the cause of crimes, tragic accidents and of course suicides. Yet the actual numbers do not bare their representations out at all. Consider some more numbers from the National Self-Defense Survey.
Among 15.7% of gun defenders interviewed nationwide during The National Self Defense Survey, the defender believed that someone "almost certainly" would have died had the gun not been used for protection -- a life saved by a privately held gun about once every 1.3 minutes. (In another 14.2% cases, the defender believed someone "probably" would have died if the gun hadn't been used in defense.)
In 83.5 % of those successful gun defenses, the attacker either used or threatened force first. So much for the gun control argument that gun availability for self-defense will not make any difference.
Further in 91.7% of these defensive uses the people protecting themselves neither killed nor wounded their attackers. This surely destroys the oft used argument that gun ownership leads to wild west style shootouts in the streets doesn’t it? Of course the media is incredibly irresponsible in their consistent non-reporting of these defensive uses of firearms. At most these stories will receive only passing mention in the vast majority of media outlets. And that is only if they are mentioned at all.
Yet another popular gun control myth put forward is that a gun will most likely be used against a family member or a loved one. Yet as the survey showed over 70 % of the defensive uses were against a stranger, while those against a family member or loved one was well below 10\%.
Another very popular gun control tactic is to insist that alternate self-defense options such as pepper spray or martial arts are preferable to using a gun. Yet in this survey over half of these incidents the intended victim was facing two or more attackers. And in a quarter of them three or more attackers were menacing the victim. Pepper spray or hand to hand combat would not have served the intended victims nearly as well as their guns did. Yet those intent on disarming America insist on selling the lie that guns do not make us safer.
Of course possibly the most maligned laws by gun control advocates are concealed carry laws. In every state, which allows citizens to carry weapons violent crime, has dropped yet the cries of gun grabbers to do away with these laws for safety’s sake continue. The Self-Defense Survey proves most damning to the cries against these laws. Nearly 80\% of the defensive gun uses were by citizens with concealed weapons. Further a quarter of the uses occurred away from the defenders home. Where would these innocent citizens have been without these laws?
The evidence from this study makers it very clear just how wrong the gun grabbers of America are. The may argue all day about wanting to reduce violent crimes yet they argue against Americans arming themselves. If they were to get their way there would have been more, many more victims of violent crimes, not fewer in this nation.
The gun control crowd loves to talk about our children and reducing crime and safety. Yet if their stated desires ever become the law of our land what will our children have to look forward to? More rapes, more robberies, more assaults, more murders, and more victims.
Maybe those who want us not to own guns really do care and really think they have our best interests at heart. But there are 2,452,643 Americans who will surely disagree.

EVEN THE CANUCKS GET IT: POLICE UNION BLASTS GUN REGISTRY
Monday, January 05, 2004
Jim Hinter, National Firearms Assoc.
The union head of Calgary's front-line police officers is calling for the federal government to scrap the billion-dollar gun registry because it has been a colossal failure in reducing violent crime in the country.
Al Koenig, president of the Calgary Police Association, said the vast amount of money spent on the firearms program could have been much better put to use for front-line police officers in Canada.

BIG DUMMY UPSET WITH CHICAGO BUT WON'T MOVE
The way this City Council dreams up one revenue scam after another to prey on the citizens of Chicago, now that they have the police actively involved in the latest of these pitiful revenue scams, perhaps we should change what is written on the side of each police vehicle to ''We serve and collect.''
Recently I was among hundreds of motorists who were pulled over trying to navigate around a large number of Chicago's finest dressed like bums to ticket motorists not wearing a seat belt. The motorists were angry about being stopped. The police were not happy about having to be revenue collectors for Mayor Daley and his City Council. In essence, all involved in this inconvenient debacle were not happy about it.
It is sickening the way the mayor and City Council utilize police as revenue collectors in this fashion. The police are paid thousands of tax dollars each to serve and protect, not serve and collect.
It is even sadder that the only way this dysfunctional City Council can raise revenue is by ticketing, towing, booting, taxing and now police-collection scamming of its citizens. It does not surprise me at all, because this is the same City Council that approved a new stadium for the losing Chicago Bears and also approved hundreds of millions of dollars worth of accident-causing flowerpots clogging our city's main arteries.

From 1997 to 2000, paintball-related injuries nationwide climbed from 926 to 2,780, with up to a third of them occurring in children younger than 15, according to the study, which analyzed injury data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

GENERAL BORLING ON SUNDAY TV TODAY....100% BEHIND CONCEALED CARRY
TO:
Rod McCulloch
Campaign Director
Borling For Senate
I enjoyed General Borling's interviews on ABC and NBC this morning. I appreciated especially how he confronted the issue of Concealed Carry to obviously "aghast" interviewers.
I am hoping the pro-life crowd splits their vote allowing the General to win the primary. While I realize how devisive the abortion issue is, I believe it is impossible for the next senator from Illinois to be strictly pro-life. In any case, it would be fool hardy of the Illinois GOP to drive further into the ditch over this issue. Why? Because to do so is to invite the likes of Barack Obama to be our senator.
All my best, please keep me on you mailing list.

POLICE AUCTIONS ON LINE...GET A BARGAIN BUYING WHAT SOMEONE ELSE FORFEITED TO THE GOVERNMENT
Today's law enforcement agencies have property rooms full of stolen or forfeited goods. The rightful owners are not easily identified, and once merchandise is no longer needed as evidence, it must be disposed of properly. Enter Property Bureau. Founded and managed by former police officers, Property Bureau harnesses the power of the Internet to quickly move items out of police property rooms, reduce personnel costs and generate revenue well beyond traditional police auction methods. And there is no cost to the participating police or sheriffs department.
Property Bureau has taken full advantage of the Internet's potential by creating PropertyRoom.com, an online auction site that gives property room items maximum exposure, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It's a dynamic marketplace that provides buyers with a huge array of products to choose from. As opposed to selling in lots, each item is merchandised individually with a photo and description, generating revenue much higher than traditional offline police auctions. Site traffic is driven by offline and online advertising and public relations campaigns.

BIG DUMMY REPORTS BULLETS FLYING ALL OVER THE PLACE. MAYOR DALEY SAFE.
Residents of two South Side neighborhoods spoke out Friday to try to stop a spate of shootings after a woman walking with her daughter was critically wounded and a youth who allegedly pointed a gun at police was shot.
Brenda Griffin, 35, was walking home with her 16-year-old daughter in the 100 block of East 102nd Place Thursday night in the Roseland neighborhood when she was shot four times, police said. She was in critical condition at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
On Friday afternoon, police shot a 14-year-old boy in the leg after he allegedly brandished a gun he picked up after dropping the weapon as officers chased him in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
"There are bullets flying all over the place," said Amelia Gallardo, the 20th Ward Democratic precinct captain, who lives near Friday's shooting scene.

BANK ROBBERIES UP IN NEW YORK CITY - MORE THAN ONE A DAY - WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING GUNS!
Bank robberies in New York City soared by 64 percent last year over 2002, driven by an increase in unarmed robberies, the police said yesterday.
There were 408 bank robberies in 2003, an average of more than one a day, the police said. The vast majority of those — 342 — were carried out without the use of a weapon, the police said.

WHY PEOPLE FEAR GUNS
People fear guns. Yet, while guns make it easier for bad things to happen, they also make it easier for people to protect themselves.
By John R. Lott Jr.
With the avalanche of horrific news stories about guns over the years, it's no wonder people find it hard to believe that, according to surveys (one I conducted for 2002 for my book, "The Bias Against Guns," and three earlier academic surveys by different researchers published in such journals as the Journal of Criminal Justice) there are about two million defensive gun uses (search) each year; guns are used defensively four times more frequently than they are to commit crimes.
The rebuttal to this claim always is: If these events were really happening, wouldn't we hear about them on the news? Many people tell me that they have never heard of an incident of defensive gun use. There is a good reason for their confusion. In 2001, the three major television networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- ran 190,000 words' worth of gun-crime stories on their morning and evening national news broadcasts. But they ran not a single story mentioning a private citizen using a gun to stop a crime.
The print media was almost as biased: The New York Times ran 50,745 words on contemporaneous gun crimes, but only one short, 163-word story on a retired police officer who used his gun to stop a robbery. For USA Today, the tally was 5,660 words on gun crimes versus zero on defensive uses.
Just take some of the 18 defensive gun uses that I found covered by newspapers around the country during the first 10 days of December.....

WILMETTE MAY CHARGE MAN WHO DEFENDED HIS FAMILY WITH GUN
A Wilmette man will not face criminal charges for shooting an intruder who broke into his house (but read on) twice within 24 hours, then drove to the hospital in the family's stolen sport-utility vehicle, authorities said Wednesday.
Hale DeMar acted in self defense when he fired at the man in a confrontation in his kitchen earlier this week, said Cook County state's attorney's spokeswoman Marcy Jensen.
On Wednesday, prosecutors provided new details of the shooting, which took place about 10:30 p.m. Monday in DeMar's house in the 0-99 block of Linden Avenue near Lake Michigan.
DeMar, 54, was tucking his two children, ages 8 and 10, into bed when he heard the home's security alarm go off, Jensen said.
'Armed with a gun, he went down to the kitchen, where he saw a figure who appeared to be masked,' Jensen said. 'He fired once. The person advanced in his direction. He fired again. The defendant passed him, went into the living room and tried to break out the window. It took a couple of tries.'
Although the state's attorney's office ruled out charging DeMar, Wilmette police said they were not sure whether he would be cited for violating a local ordinance banning handguns. A conviction could carry a fine of up to $750.
MY LETTER TO THE WILMETTE POLICE (police@wilmette.com)
Attention Officer Roger Ockrim:
I just want to lend my voice to charging Hale DeMar as being the just thing to do. If this Wilmette ban on hand guns means anything it must be enforced equally. It will greatly enlighten the citizens of Wilmette as well to see what happens when you own a gun for self-defense in Wilmette.
I suspect the citizens will rise up to have the law stricken and the result would be a great community service. If not, then I guess the citizens prefer to "dial 911 and die" which is also their prerogative.
Please pass this on to your chief as charging Mr. DeMar is a great way to find out if the Wilmette hand gun ban has outlived it's usefulness or not. If Mr. DeMar surrenders his hand gun it's okay with me as I have an FFL and I'll give him another one on the house.
Happy New Year to you officer and may your department do the right thing for all citizens of Wilmette.

CHICAGO BRAGS LESS THAN 600 BIG DUMMIES MURDERED
Chicago had 599 homicides, compared with 594 in New York City and fewer than 500 in Los Angeles. But Chicago's homicide rate is three times that of New York, which has nearly three times the population.
Chicago's homicide problem, Cline often says, is tied to the trinity of gangs, guns and drugs.
There are too many gangs squabbling over too little turf to sell drugs, and there are far too many guns available, police said. In 2002, Chicago police seized 10,182 guns. They seized nearly as many in 2003.
Well, I don't think Chicago will be under 600. Someone shot last year will die and that will put them over the top. Also, as to the trinity of gangs, guns and drugs. Gangs are not going anywhere and they reproduce at a rate far higher than they can be arrested. And if you did arrest them all where would find the prisons to put them in?
10,000 guns? Out of 260,000,000 and more made every day? Good luck. And remember many of the guns seized were for self-defense and never to be used in a crime anyway. I suppose all 10,000 guns seized came from gun shows too and none from the trunks of sqad cars? So that leaves drugs. The war on drugs has been lost, we only don't know it yet. And legalizing is not going to happen.
What I'm saying is, the Trinity is not going away. As long as the public continues to believe the government line that a drug war is better than legalization these shootings will continue. Who has the most to gain? More cops is good and they can go on the take too. Lawyers love it, more cases. Judges have full time employment. Prison industry booming. Loads of money to go around so what is the lives of 600 big dummies compared to all that money to be had?
They say you can't put a price on human life. They were wrong.

WE'RE # ONE! - CHICAGO POISED TO BE TOP MURDER CAPITAL........AGAIN - BUT MAYOR REPORTED SAFE
In the last six months, slayings in Chicago were down from the same period last year. But the city was still poised on New Year's Eve to finish the year with more homicides than any other American city for the second time in three years.
Chicago had 599 homicides, compared with 594 in New York City and fewer than 500 in Los Angeles. But Chicago's homicide rate is three times that of New York, which has nearly three times the population.
Still, Chicago police feel a sense of momentum heading into 2004. As police commanders gathered Tuesday around the video screen in the Deployment Operations Center, there was a hopeful mood.
Yep, this gun-free zone sure is working in Big Dummy Land. Daley stated he wanted to be held resposible when he became dictator....when are the Big Dummys going to hold him accountable????
And, fewer than 600 murders would be a victory? Give me a break!

BILL LIMITS GUN-BUYER DATABASE
House Republicans have included language in the omnibus appropriations bill to prevent federal law enforcement from maintaining a 90-day database on gun buyers, angering gun control advocates but moving closer to the original intent of the law.
The House passed an amendment to the omnibus bill earlier this month that would require all records from mandatory background checks on potential gun owners authorized by the Brady bill to be destroyed within 24 hours of a legal purchase. The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) currently maintain the files for 90 days.
'Congress isn't helping law enforcement when they pass something like this,' said Sarah Brady, chairman of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. 'Last week, we marked the 10th anniversary of the Brady law, and this week the House wants to pass legislation that limits law enforcement's ability to stop criminals from getting guns.'
As usual, Sarah continues to lie or just doesn't want to see the obvious
